Street food vendors are a common place to grab a quick snack in Japan and something important to note as a traveler. In Japan, the cuisine is unique and delicious, and the street food is worth trying even beyond the 10 we have selected for you in this post. We’ve picked out the following to share a glimpse of what you can expect on the streets of Japan.
Okonomiyaki
This is a savory pancake with various ingredients that you like. Translating to “what you like” or “how you like,” this dish is often referred to as a Japanese pizza.
Yakisoba
Soba wheat noodles stir fried with small chopped pieces of pork and vegetables, cooked with a thick, sweet sauce similar to oyster sauce.
Takoyaki
Ball-shaped snack made from wheat-flour batter and cooked in a special pan to maintain the shape. They are usually filled with octopus, tempura, pickled ginger, or green onion at the center then brushed with takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise.
Crepes
A snack that originally derives from France is also a very popular street food in Japan that has truck vendors almost everywhere. This is definitely an accessible treat that one should try in Japan.

Taiyaki
A sweet fish shaped cakes filled with red bean, custard, or chocolate. They are cooked in a fished shaped pan and come out crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Tomorokoshi
Corn grilled with miso, butter and soy sauce. Simple, but satisfying, this is just grilled corn but with the Japanese touch.
Yaki Imo
Baked sweet potatoes over wood fire. This is a simple and very traditional snack in Japan. It’s a healthy snack to grab if you’re feeling a break from all the gluttony. They’re usually available via small trucks like a mom and pop situation.
Imagawayaki
A cake-like dessert with filling such as red bean paste, chocolate, or custard that comes in a disk like shape.
Ramen
Ramen is a perfect quick meal as a soothing one at the end of your long day. There are often little stands set up along the street to get your fix.
